Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin.

The Yalta Conference of February 4, 1945 was the last meeting of the “Big Three,” Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin. Roosevelt died shortly after the conference, leaving a legacy of doubt and suspicion regarding agreements made at the conference. However Roosevelt made a huge impact on the decisions that were taken in the conference, including the "Declaration on Liberated Europe".

Aims
  • Roosevelt believed that democracy is the best governmental type for the Europe.
  • Recover Europe to resume the trade with the biggest partners such as Germany.
  • Furthermore he wanted to establish United Nations that would control the peace in the world.
  • Roosevelt did not want to put high reparation payments on Germany, to not repeat the Treaty of Versailles faults.

Roosevelt's main war aims were that he believed that the best and only governmental type should be democracy. As well he wanted Germany to recover as it was the biggest trade partner. As Wilson said trade brings peace so that Roosevelt believed. He desired to encourage avoiding high reparation payments on German, as he did not want to repeat the Treaty of Versailles mistakes. Moreover he wanted to establish United Nations to control the world peace.

Ideology
  • Roosevelt believed in capitalism and that competition is the main factor of growth.
  • He also believed in freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear that was the main characteristics of the democracy.
  • Human rights were also the main ideology of the democratic USA and he wanted to introduce it in the Europe.

Roosevelt was ideological as Wilson was, he believed in capitalism and that competition will develop Europe’s industry. He said that democracy will bring all of this, especially freedom at all meanings. Moreover he was worried about Human rights in Europe, he wanted to pursuit governments to strongly stay behind this ideology, especially in Eastern Europe where Communist’s power was growing.

Historical Expreince
  • America had a war experience, for example in the First World War USA lost 116'000 men and in the Second World War lost 410'000.
  • Also USA was involved in the one of the biggest economic depressions in 1930s that was caused by high European tariffs on American goods.

After the experiences in 1900's - 1930's Roosevelt didn't want to repeat the mistakes from the past. Firstly he was horrified by the American losses in the Second World War in which 450.000 Americans died, while in the First World War. 116.000 men were killed. Of course comparing with the USSR's losses of 26 millions of people America's casualties seems to be small-scaled. However for America scale was way too huge. Secondly Roosevelt believed that trade brings peace. Therefore he wanted Germany to recover quickly, not as it was after the First World War. He also wanted to avoid another depression. In 1930's it was caused by the raise of the taxes of the American goods in Europe. Therefore he wanted a free trade for all the countries. And thirdly the experience of the failure of the League of Nations in 1930's allowed Roosevelt to establish United Nations with corrected mistakes.

Personality
  • Roosevelt believed Stalin and wanted to co-operate with him despite his military advisers.
  • During the conference Roosevelt felt sick and he died of a cerebral haemorrhage on 12 April 1945

As Roosevelt was feeling unwell, he couldn’t argue for his desires at Yalta. Also he believed in his special relationship with Stalin. Before the Yalta Conference Roosevelt mentioned Stalin in his speech:

“I just have a hunch, that Stalin doesn’t want anything but security for his country,

and I think that if I give him everything I possibly can and ask nothing from him in return…

he wouldn’t try to annex anything and will work with for a world of democracy and peace.”

A brilliant web page full of all essential information clearly explained. To improve note that Roosevelt trusted Stalin and believed he could work with him. Also note Roosevelt needed Soviet help to defeat Japan. Lastly Roosevelt, again like Wilson with The League of Nations, believed the UNO would keep world peace, he was prepared to make concessions with Stalin to get Stalin to work with the UNO which would solve all future problems peacefully.
