    Marshall Plan
    {http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/24/US-MarshallPlanAid-Logo.svg/506px-US-MarshallPlanAid-Logo.svg.png}
    In 1947 General George Marshall was sent to Europe to access the economic state of Europe. He found out that European economies were in ruins. People were starving and there were enormous shortages of all kind of goods, plus European countries owed $ 11.5 billion to the USA. So the Marshall suggested that $17 billion would be needed to rebuild European economies.This became known as the Marshall Plan.
    Why did America launch the Marshall Plan in 1947?
    {http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b3/Marshall_Plan_poster.JPG/220px-Marshall_Plan_poster.JPG}
    Congress accepted the Marshalll Plan only in 1948, when the Communists took over Czechoslovakia. It had been ruled by a coolitional government that contained Communists who were trying to be independent from Moscow, but in 1948 anti-Soviet leaders were purged. So another country "fell" under pressure of Communism and suddenly USA realized the threat. America became prosperious because of the trade, but if Europe would become Communsit it won't trade with it anymore. So USA accepted the Marshall Plan not only because of charity, but as well as its wealth was depended on Europe economy.

    Why was Stalin annoyed about the Marshall Plan?
    {http://www.mudvillemagazine.com/bug/images/uploads/marshall1.gif}
    At the beginning Stalin was glad that America is going to give Europe money, because he counted that he would also be in it and would finally receive American loans and could repair Russian economy. But want he found out after is that America was going to give most of its money to European countries that are not under the ''sphere of influence'' of Communism. Which meant that nor U.S.S.R. nor other countries that were under its control would receive money. Stalin got really annoyed because of that as that would also mean that countries would recover from the War and would not want Russian ''help'' and start trading with America. He also understood that America betrayed him and will never give him his loans.

    Stalin's policy in Eastern Europe ( Rafa could you please do this point ) Kate
    Stalin knew that Truman could do nothing against him controlling Eastern Europe. Stalin had he biggest land army in the world, the Red Army.
    At first, Stalin rigged the elections, so that the communist parties controlled the coalition governments.
    He also eliminated some opposition, but not all. This gave out a message of warning to anti-communists living in Eastern Europe. But because he didn't eliminate all opposition, it seemed fair. Stalin thought friendly governments meant communist governments.
    His Red Army was there to intimidate and control. This maintained the peoples of Eastern Europe under Stalin's Sphere of Influence.
    The Secret Police also imprisoned, killed and tortured anyone who opposed to communism and the Soviet Union.
    Once it was clear to Stalin that the USA was not going to loan money to the Soviet Union Stalin proceeded to gain TOTAL control over Eastern Europe.
    He set the governments to be completely communist. He replaced anyone who wasn't loyal to him, by extreme communist government leaders, who were completely loyal.
    He eliminated ALL opposition, he controlled the press, he prohibited free speech, so that no one could criticize the government.
    He tortured and killed anyone who was in his way.
    In 1947, he set up the Cominform, (Communist Information Bureau), to coordinate the work of communist parties in Eastern Europe. The Cominform usually brought back the communist leaders to Moscow, for briefing. This allowed Stalin to assess them and see if they were completely loyal to him.
    All these factors explain Stalin's policy and complete domination over Eastern Europe.

    Did Stalin break agreements?
    No, he did not.

    Why did Stalin launch the Cominform?
    What was the consequence of the Czech Coup of 1948?
    The Czech Coup 1948
    In February 1948 an event called the Czech Coup got all control of the Czechoslovakian government, it was the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia with the backing of the Soviets. On the 25th February President Beneš was worried a civil war would break out if he didn’t, he let Gottwalt lead a new government where ministers of the non-communist party weren’t included. This new government was made out of Communists and Pro-Moscow Social Democrats. The only non-communist was Jan Masayk who was in charge of common affaires, however 2 weeks later he was found dead. On May the 9th Czechoslovakia was declared the ‘People’s Democracy’. On the may elections a staggering 82.9% voted for Communists. All non-communist parties became loyal partners of the communists. Beneš resigned on the 2nd of June letting Gottwald take his place.
    Its Consequences
    Czechoslovakia suffered with four decades of communist dictatorship until the Velvet Revolution in 1989.
    Worsened the cold war, fear of war aroused.
    Helped the western countries unify against the communist bloc, it spend up the western alliance: Treaty of Brussels.
    Countries were demanding concrete military forces and alliances against the USSR incase something happened.
    For the USSR the coup couldn’t have come at a worse time, the USSR was seen as wanting to expand its territory.
    The Marshall Plan was put straight into action after the Czech Coup.
